Yorktown completes perfect 28-0 campaign for Fifth State Title
After a slow start, No. 1 Yorktown completed its second perfect season in the last three years by taking a 3-1 (16-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-15) win over Munster in the Class 4A championship match.
Coach Stephanie Bloom’s Tigers saw the Mustangs come out hot, hitting .361 as a team in the opening set as five Munster players recorded at least two kills in the set.
It was all downhill from there for No. 3 Munster, however, as the Tigers won set two by never trailing and won set three also without trailing and being tied only once (at 5-5). In the clincher, Yorktown scored the first nine points en route to claiming the school’s fifth title overall.
The 28-0 Tigers also took the title in 2000, 2011, 2016 and 2018 when they were the last undefeated team (at 34-0) to date to win a state title.
Yorktown had four players in double-digits with kills, led by Ellee Stinson’s 12. She also had a match-best 31 digs.
Munster, which came in on a 26-match winning streak, got 14 kills each from Haley Melby and Lourdes Torres.
Coach Brett Boden’s Mustangs, who were making their first state finals appearance since 1977, finished 32-3
